Mayors, Council Members, City Managers and Utility Directors from
North Carolina public power communities will attend the annual Public
Power Rally Day today at the General Assembly. The group will meet
with legislators to show their support for NC cities and towns that
own and operate their city electric distribution systems.

North Carolina public power communities experienced no outages
Thursday, Feb. 1 during the state’s winter storm. Our communities
monitor weather forecasts and prepare for prompt restoration of
interrupted electric service. Should a community experience an outage,
public power communities work together to restore power as quickly
as possible using the Emergency Assistance Program. Cities that
are not affected by the weather travel and assist those that are
affected by the weather conditions.

sleet and freezing rain that may affect our communities Thursday

The City of Lexington, in cooperation with North Carolina Municipal
Power Agency Number 1 (NCMPA1), one of the state’s two municipal
power agencies, has added two new electric power generating units
at the City’s Cotton Grove Substation on Highway 8 just south
of I-85. The Cotton Grove Substation is a main electrical facility
for Lexington’s citizens. The generator will provide power
to Lexington during times of heavy electric usage and it will be
an emergency source of electric power for the City during power
outages.

A team representing NC Public Power Communities across the state
participated in the MS150 Bike Event in New Bern September 9 and
10. The 20-member team, along with 1,500 other riders, raised funds
for multiple sclerosis research.

Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to reach North Carolina later
today. Ernesto is expected to bring high winds and heavy rains to
much of North Carolina. Although the storm is not expected to reach
hurricane strength, its high winds may cause severe thunderstorms,
spawn tornados and cause tree limbs to fall. Also, flooding is highly
likely and flash flood watches are in effect for much of NC.

Sixteen public power communities received “Awards of Excellence”
at ElectriCities Annual Meeting, August 11-12, 2006. Cities apply
for awards in the following categories: Grassroots/Building Political
Strength; Economic Development; Communications; Customer Service;
Key Accounts; Cooperative Purchasing; and, Training. ElectriCities
members from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia attend
Annual Meeting.

ElectriCities Annual Meeting begins August 11 in Myrtle Beach.
The two-day meeting includes educational programs for city owned
electric systems. Members of ElectriCities are from North Carolina,
South Carolina and Virginia.

At 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 30 at the Stanly County Airport in Albemarle,
NC, the Stanly County Economic Development Commission (EDC), City
of Albemarle and ElectriCities of NC, Inc. will celebrate the new
Prime Power ParkTM , a new product that will
offer businesses the experience of the State’s only industrial
park featuring on-site backup power generation. The Park is the
result of a collaboration of Albemarle, Stanly County EDC and ElectriCities
together with the property owner, Gus Schad.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a new operating
license for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant. The NRC officially issued
the new operating licenses today, which will authorize both Brunswick
reactors to operate into the 2030s.
The NRC's primary mission is to protect the public health and safety
and the environment from the effects of radiation from nuclear reactors,
materials and waste facilities. The NRC regulates nuclear materials
and facilities to promote the common defense and security.

Remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto will reach North Carolina Wednesday.

is expected to become extratropical on Wednesday as it moves through

North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number 1 (NCMPA1) and Progress
Ventures, Inc. have announced a new agreement whereby Progress Ventures
will provide NCMPA1 with 100 to 150 MW of peaking capacity. The
contract will run from 2011 through 2030 with energy coming from
Progress Ventures’ generating facility located in Rowan County,
N.C. The Rowan County facility consists of five natural gas-fired
units totaling 920 MW of simple and combined cycle generation. Currently
Progress Ventures provides 50 MW of peaking capacity and energy,
under a separate contract, to NCMPA1 through 2015.

New officers were elected to North Carolina’s two Municipal
Power Agencies (power agencies). North Carolina Municipal Power
Agency Number One (NCMPA1) and North Carolina Eastern Municipal
Power Agency (NCEMPA) elected officers to lead the organizations
this coming year. Each power agency reviews operations of its respective
entity and approves an annual operating budget. The two power agencies
elect representatives to the ElectriCities Board of Directors (ElectriCities
Board). The 14-member Board of Directors advises and directs the
activities and policies for the power agencies and ElectriCities,
a municipal electric system trade association. The ElectriCities
Board also serves a coordination function.

Raleigh, NC, ---- Jesse C. Tilton, III, Chief Executive Officer,
ElectriCities of North Carolina, was elected to the Board of Directors
of the American Public Power Association (APPA) at its National
Conference in June in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Tilton was elected
to a three-year term on the board.
